Before buying or selling a stock or ETF, investors should understand how orders work. The order type affects execution, price control, and the chance that a trade may not fill.
Market orders
A market order prioritizes execution. It may fill quickly, but the final price can differ from the last quoted price, especially in volatile or thinly traded securities.
Limit orders
A limit order sets the highest price a buyer is willing to pay or the lowest price a seller is willing to accept. It gives price control, but execution is not guaranteed.
Avoid rushed trading
Check the ticker, order type, quantity, estimated cost, bid-ask spread, and account impact before submitting. A simple review can prevent costly mistakes caused by similar symbols or fast-moving prices.
Trading involves risk, including possible loss of principal. This article is educational and not individualized investment advice.
