How to Compare Mutual Funds and ETFs Before Investing

Mutual funds and ETFs can make diversified exposure easier to access, but two funds with similar names can have very different holdings, costs, risks, and tax behavior. A careful comparison starts with the role the fund is meant to play.

Compare the objective and holdings

Read the investment objective, benchmark, principal strategy, top holdings, sector exposure, and geographic exposure. A fund labeled broad or balanced may still contain concentrations that matter.

Review complete costs

Expense ratios are important, but investors should also check sales loads, transaction fees, bid-ask spreads, advisory fees, tax costs, and any account charges from the platform or intermediary.

Understand trading differences

Mutual funds generally transact at end-of-day net asset value, while ETFs trade throughout the day at market prices that can be above or below net asset value. The better choice depends on the investor’s needs and behavior.
